Archery the Technical Side (Legends of the Longbow Series ; Volume 5)
Published in Leather Bound by Derrydale (15 January, 1947)
Authors: Hickman and Forrest Nagler

Archery the Technical Side
Before the invention of the present compound bow, before the invention of the fiberglass recurve of the 1960's, was the wooden bow. This is an outstanding book for the the true traditional archery lover. Not a how-to book but collection of essays and real studies about the performance of the weapon. It is an attempt to find the best design and materials from before the war. Hickman and his fellow archers took a scientific approach to the study of the wooden bow and arrows. This book is a collection of studies on the subject of arrows in flight, studied in wind tunnels for the first time, wooden bows, and wood species. They compared designs and its effect on performance and came up with the "perfect longbow". The author and his colleagues were the leading scientist in the Manhattan Project and applied what they discovered about arrow flight to the A- bomb casing. In this case they fused the alpha (arrows) to the omega (A-bomb) of weaponry. I have built many of the bows in the book and found them to out perform modern bows. The copy I read was signed by the author who gave the book to our mutual physician and fellow long-bow lover.

great book for learning basic biological systems

A Baby Born in Bethlehem
Published in School & Library Binding by Albert Whitman & Co (September, 1999)
Authors: Martha Whitmore Hickman and Giuliano Ferri
Average review score:

A Very Special Christmas Story
Martha Whitmore Hickman stays very close to the bible story in every detail without making things too complicated for the little ones. The illustrations are light and glorious. This is just a perfect and very sweet re-telling of the Christmas Story. (If you have a child younger than three- I would also recommend "Christmas in the Manger" illustration by Felicia Bond.)

Beyond the Wild Shores (Land of the Far Horizon , No 4)
Published in Paperback by Bethany House (June, 1997)
Author: Patricia Hickman
Average review score:

Beyond the Wild Shores
Beyond the Wild Shores catapults us back to a time when women not only had to work hard at the career of their choice but to work hard justifying having a career outside traditional roles. I love Baily Templeton, who is mistakenly hired as a Head Master of the rugged, Out-back colony of Sydney Cove. Her determination and love for teaching soon win the hearts of those she's seeking to reach as well as those that she is not seeking to reach--the handsome Captain Grant Hogan who is reluctantly but irrersistably drawn to her gentle gumption. Wonderfully inspirational. I loved it!

Case Method; Business Interviewing
Published in Hardcover by Addison-Wesley Pub Co (31 December, 1994)
Authors: Linda Hickman and Cliff Longman
Average review score:

Improve communication with your clients!
As an IT consultant I spend a lot of time keeping abreast of technical information, refining my understanding of techniques and acquiring new skills. Like my colleagues I tend to focus on the technical side, forgetting that "soft skills" are just as important.

This book is about those "soft skills" and it has greatly influenced how I approach one of the most important activities in which consultants engage - interviewing and elicitation. Prior to reading this book I viewed this activity as an art and, to be honest, as a necessary evil. As a group IT consultants have traditionally failed at effectively communicating with business users. There has been much written about aligning IT to business, but little has been said about how to go about it. This book changes that - at least from a requirements gathering and communications point of view.

To begin, it takes a methodical approach to the interview process by defining deliverables. We consultants seem to do this for every activity *except* interviewing. It then gives an example situation, and covers the basics of interviewing.

As you go through this book you will find sound advice on note taking, managing interview material, and advanced techniques.

Among the advanced techniques are how to read non-verbal communications (body language), how to match conversation styles with your subjects, and how to manage the interview. This is excellent material that should be read by any consultant who has customer contact.

I especially liked the chapter on facilitating workshops and groups, managing feedback sessions and eliciting knowledge (as opposed to eliciting information). I also found the checklists provided throughout the book to be excellent aids and have copied them for my own use.

This book should be required reading for all consultants and IT professionals regardless of their level of experience. It gives us a set of tools to use to align IT and business, starting with the most basic of activities: effectively communicating.

Children's Literature in the Classroom: Weaving Charlotte's Web
Published in Hardcover by Christopher-Gordon Pub (March, 1989)
Authors: Janet Hickman and Bernice E. Cullinan
Average review score:

A beautifully compiled book by many people
In ten years, I'm the first to comment; amazing. This book provides a lot of material in preparing for the college class I'm teaching on children's literature. I read aloud from it often in class because I can't say it as beautifully as the people who wrote the sections; people such as Marcia Brown and Madeleine L'Engle. The title is a play on the book by White but is actually a compilation of writings in honor of Charlotte Huck by many of her former students in the masters of children's literature at Ohio State University.

Christian Science Board of Directors Defying By-Laws . . .
Christian Science Board of Directors defying Mrs. Eddy's By-Laws in taking and holding offices, for the closing of which she provided in her Church, are not legitimate - the position in Christian Science of Augusta E. Stetson, C.S.D., analyzed and explained by her students Franklin Ford and Hickman Price. Originally broadcast in 1927 from Radio Station WHAP in New York City, this address is a spirited defense of "genuine Christian Science as promulgated by Mary Baker Eddy." All of Mrs. Stetson's writings reveal dominion in her Christian life and Christian Science practice. Booklet; portraits; 30 pages; reprint of the 1927 edition.

A Day of Rest: Creating a Spiritual Space in Your Week
Published in Paperback by Avon (March, 1999)
Authors: Martha Whitmore Hickman and Martha Whitmore Hickman
Average review score:

A Time for Reflection; Remember the Sabbath
A review of this book in a multigenerational Methodist Sunday School group brought forth many thoughtful comments and insights.

Ms. Hickman presents a well thought out approach to serving one's inner spiritual needs. She suggests practical ways to find time for rediscovering the Sabbath in a rushing multicultural American society. People of all ages can benefit from her advice.

No doubt her years as wife of a busy clergyman has formed her opinions of the passing scene in America. She has performed a valuable service in sharing her insights with her readers.

An excellent book, succint and to the point.

Dragons of Desolation (Dl4)
Published in Paperback by TSR Hobbies (November, 1984)
Author: Tracy Hickman
Average review score:

Grim adventure against impossible odds
The DL series was a huge leap forward for TSR - these modules featured a new emphasis on drama and storytelling that made the gaming MUCH more fun and involved for the PCs and the DM. Of course, at heart, being TSR modules from the 80s, they're still dungeon crawls! In this chapter, the heroes find themselves without hope, as the draconians conquer the lands of men, and despair drives them beyond the impassable mountains. With hundreds of refugees depending on them, they need to find a way to survive... a great, dark adventure for levels 6-8.
